RE: Campgrounds within a One Hour Radius of Burlington Ontario

You may get some help from this web site Ontario Private Campgrounds Assn.. We have stayed at several when we lived in Mississauga, Milton Heights at Hwy 25 and 401, KOA has one in the same area. Green Acres in Waterloo, Riverside in Niagara Falls (both of these have seasonals but a lot of transients). Send me a private message if you want info on a particular one and I'll tell you what I know (if anything). Happy camping,

RE: Niagra Falls

I have lived in Southern Ontario for almost 40 years and have not seen the Northern Lights here at all. When I grew up in Winnipeg, Manitoba they were very common during the winter months.

RE: Niagra Falls

I live on the Canadian side by Niagara Falls and suggest you look at http://www.riversidepark.net/ which is about 10 minutes drive from the falls. It is right on the Niagara River, has a pool and mini golf as well as a motel component. The sites are level, gravel, fully serviced and fairly well spaced. Please give yourself time to see the falls, you can do it in a day if you rush but two days are better and three even better. The Niagara Park Commission at http://www.niagaraparks.com/ offers a 'Adventure Pass' which is well worth the price. They run a People Mover bus system along the busy stretch of the Falls which is a 'hope on - hope off' system allowing you to park your car in their large lot South of the Falls for a fairly low fee and ride the bus. Last year the bus from that lot to the falls was free. One day's use is included in the Adventure Pass, if you want to ride the bus to the other attractions along the river on further days there is a fee. Do make sure to go on the 'Maid of the Mist' http://www.maidofthemist.com/en/ as it is the most magnificent way to see the falls and appreciate the power of the falls. The Maid boats are accessible from both the USA and Canadian sides of the river. Hope you enjoy your visit.

RE: parking a 5th wheel

Randy Likely the greatest changes you will experience is the 5th wheel will turn faster as you back up as the wheels under it are closer to the pivot point on your truck than the trailer was. This is more noticeable if your rig is short or a Titanium which has the sleeping area extending over the cab of the truck resulting in an even shorter pivot point to axle distance. Another to watch for is the height of the 5th wheel. It is likely several feet higher than the travel trailer was. Check for low branches before you back into a site. I have a sticker on my truck window as to how high the 5th wheel is so I can check it easily as a reminder. Also handy to check in case of low bridges, etc. Hope you enjoy your 5th wheel as much as we do ours.

RE: Buying Hitch locks / Wheel locks in Canada

There should be several sources around Vancouver. Here is one for you to look at; http://www.go-rv.com/coast/do/catalog/main?dealerId=998 and another http://fraserway.channelbladelive.com/content.asp?nav=111065&cpid=7828& They both have the same online catalogs, however, Fraserway looks to be a larger operation. Hope this is some help.

RE: off season storage

Planks under tires, tire covers to keep sun off, slides in, shades down and possible use metalized bubble type insulation to block sun, use chain or large padlock to lock propane tanks to rig, if you can't take the batteries home charge them up as much as possible and then disconnect them from the rig or pull the fuse so they are not connected to the rig (there are devices in the trailer which take power all the time i.e. propane and smoke detectors), leave fridge doors open, if you have vent covers and area is not dusty leave vents open for air circulation.

RE: Leaving hitch on 5th Wheel

I use the trailer to lift the hitch out of the truck. Then I put the tripod support under the hitch and use it to lift the hitch a bit so it is not resting on the pin. This keeps the hitch and tripod together and ready for when I want to put them back into the truck.

RE: need advice on a 5th wheel

Looks like a very nice rig. Have no experience with the brand so can't comment on how well they do on the road. As BB TX says, don't care if long or short bed, turn too far and you'll hit the cab. I have a long bed with the trailer pin straight down from the front of the trailer and very rarely do I get close to 90 deg. when turning going frontwards or back. I do worry about the torque put on the trailer frame with these long extended pin designs. Hopefully, others with experience with this brand will be able to comment on that.

RE: RV mattresses

We got a 'mattress in a box' from WalMart called a '8" spa sensations theratouch memory foam mattress' is comes in a cardboard box. about 2 ft x 2 ft x 4 ft for a Queen size, you open and unroll it, it expands from about 1" thick to 8" thick after you remove the plastic wrapper (may take a day to do so). It has 1 1/2" of memory foam and 5 1/2" of firm foam. The cloth cover has a zipper 3/4 of the way around. We are very happy with it as we both have sensitive backs and have been sleeping very well on it. To get it to fit the 5th wheel we had to cut down the length of the mattress from 80" to 75" (RV Queen Mattresses are shorter than regular Queen ones). It was easy to do, unzip the cover, use a zip knife with a long blade to cut through the foam, rezip the cover, tuck the excess cloth in at the head end of the mattress (it does not pull out as easy as it would at the foot) and you are ready to use. Cost of the Queen Mattress is $259.98 on their web page and may be a bit more in the store. The web site address is; http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=7695948

RE: Niagra-on-the-lake

I agree with 6MISFITZ and his ratings. I have stayed at several (including Shalimar) and do like Riverside. It is on the Niagara River, has a pool and mini golf. Does have a motel and seasonals but the sites are good with gravel pads. Take a look at their web site http://www.riversideparkcampgrd.com/

RE: Woodcarving..........

The Rio Grand Valley has a active woodcarving group for the Winter Texans. We stay in Tropic Star in Pharr where they have a woodcarving class as well as a regular group who meet and carve together during the week.

RE: Yellowstone, Niagara,NYC or DC--UPDATE pg 2. Survey says...

We live in Niagara Falls and do hope you enjoy your visit. Canada gets the best view of the falls but the US has a better discount mall. The KOA on Grand Island is crowded - 4 rigs share a power post and are inches apart at the rear of the rig. NF Cda has several campgrounds to choose from. The KOA has an indoor swimming pool and the sites are close but not inches apart. There is a small but very nice CG on the Niagara River abouut 10 minutes drive from the falls. They have a pool and mini golf, sites are gravel and fairly large. It is a mixed facility with a motel, seasonals as well as transients. The park's web site is http://www.riversideparkcampgrd.com/ . Having stayed in several parks in the area over the years they all have their good points (and bad ones). If you only do one thing while in the area go on the Maid of the Mist, you get a view of the falls which is a WOW. The Niagara Parks Commission has a adventure pass which gives you admission to the major attractions. Their web site is at http://www.niagaraparks.com/. The site currently has the winter package information on it but check on it later and the summer package will be offered. Enjoy the trip. To those commenting on DC - yes it is a super city to visit and we plan to do so this spring on our way home from Texas. Plan is to stop in Williamsburg and day trip in from there.
